LeBron James, the NBA’s equivalent of Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady, is an adept at taking care of his body. As he prepares for his 19th season in the NFL, James has had few serious ailments. The Los Angeles Lakers player was just as concerned about the condition of his physique this summer, which may be a source of concern for Lakers fans.
During the summer, James usually avoids taking such a long vacation from basketball-related activities. This time, however, that wasn’t the case, as LBJ said he took an excessive length of time off to ensure his ankle was completely recovered. Is the 36-year-old finally revealing cracks in his armor, and will the Lakers keep an eye on his new admission?
At the very least, the condition of James’ ankle will be something to keep an eye on throughout the season.
LeBron James sustained a severe ankle injury in the 2020-21 season, forcing him to lose significant time.
For most of the 2020-21 season, LeBron James was MVP-caliber for a Lakers team that was in cruise control. However, everything changed in the span of a single game.
The Lakers were 28-13 and on a four-game winning run when they faced the Atlanta Hawks on March 20. They seemed to be on track to compete for the top seed in the Western Conference once again. However, when James sustained a high ankle sprain against the Hawks, his chances of making a long run were severely harmed.
James was forced to miss nearly a month of activity due to the injury. He recovered in time for the playoffs, but confessed to being in discomfort and troubled by his damaged ankle. It didn’t matter in the end, as the Los Angeles Lakers’ first-round series against the Phoenix Suns was doomed by Anthony Davis’ absence.
In some respects, LeBron’s health should have benefitted by his early departure. He finally had a long offseason to come back to full health after so many years of playing into June.
James is in good shape ahead of the 2021-22 NBA season opening against the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday. However, the unique nature of his offseason raises concerns among Lakers supporters.
James confessed that he didn’t play basketball for the first two months of the summer.
LeBron James had such a tough time controlling his ankle discomfort that he had to completely change his summer regimen.
According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin (h/t Harrison Faigen of SB Nation), the four-time NBA MVP “didn’t do much basketball things” in the first two months of the summer, which is “unusual” for him. James continued to train but didn’t feel comfortable participating in basketball-related activities, he added.
Despite the fact that James’ ankle seemed to be in better shape this summer, he maintains it is healthy. The additional rest — which includes missing much of the preseason activity — seems to have worked.
Simultaneously, the fact that LBJ realized he needed to take it easy this summer may have supporters concerned about re-injury. The fact that James does not believe in load management adds to this idea.
LeBron does not play the game with the intention of injuring himself.

When top players are dealing with lingering ailments, it’s not unusual for clubs to exercise caution. However, LeBron James does not believe in load control, which may complicate matters for the Lakers.
After playing a career-low in minutes last season, James indicated he does not expect another drop in minutes this season. He emphasized that he did not play the game with the intention of injuring himself. Even yet, it’s worth remembering that he had less time to concentrate on basketball. Yes, this is LeBron James, one of the NBA’s most talented and intelligent players. LBJ, on the other hand, will need some time to get into a routine.
Frank Vogel, the Lakers’ head coach, may be frustrated by the 17-time All-insistence Star’s on sustaining a heavy workload. Realistically, James’ admission that his ankle issue forced him to take it easy should signal that the club must be very cautious with his minutes while also giving him a day off now and then.
Despite a difficult summer, LeBron James has moved on from his injury. That’s a nerve-wracking thought for Lakers fans as they prepare for the regular-season opening against the Warriors.
