Thanksgiving is one of the most important holidays in America, but its origins are actually pretty obscure.

This year, the traditional sit-down lunch is back, replete with exquisite china, linen tablecloths, and lots of good company.

ROBLES PASO — Thanksgiving for Paso Robles has served approximately 1,200 people each year for the last 36 years.

Thanksgiving for Paso Robles delivered on its pledge to provide Thanksgiving meal to individuals in need in 2020. Due to COVID constraints, however, volunteers prepared take-out meals and brought them to the community instead of the customary sit-down supper.

Chairman David Kudija says they’re planning to produce 1,500 lunches, which is 300 more than normal, due to the difficult conditions of the previous two years.

David has been volunteering for almost 27 years. “I got engaged because I wanted to become amazing at carving turkeys, and I was the turkey carver for almost six years,” he chuckles. I’d cut 20 to 28 turkeys a year—I’m a turkey carver extraordinaire.”

David is now the chairman of the Thanksgiving for Paso Robles committee and a captain for the Pioneer Day Bean Feed.

Thanksgiving for Paso Robles is operated entirely by volunteers and is entirely supported by contributions. The yearly meal costs around $9,000 and requires about 200 volunteers.

On Monday, volunteers begin preparing and cooking the meals, and by Thursday, they will be able to feed about 2,000 people. This year, the neighborhood will be served 70 turkeys and hams.

This year, more than ever, volunteers are required. Volunteers to assist clean up supper are always needed, according to Kudija.

Kudija describes the business as a one-day eatery. In one day, everything is put up, served, and then taken down. It’s a lot of effort, but chatting with Kudija, it seems like it’ll be well worth it.

Fine china, tablecloths, and lots of excellent company are all part of the classic sit-down lunch.

“It’s rewarding work, and I’ve met a lot of wonderful individuals while doing it.” “We try to make things lighthearted,” David said.

This year’s supper menu contains the following items:

• Turkey Roasted in the Oven
• Ham
• Gravy Dressing & Mashed Potatoes
• Beans, green
• Yams Candied
• Sauce made with cranberries
• Rolls
• Homemade Pies

Guests may either sit down for a meal or have a meal delivered to them if they are unable to come down to the park.

Thanksgiving in Paso Robles is a “gathering of thankfulness” that serves a traditional Thanksgiving lunch to about 1,500 men, women, and children from all walks of life. A real manifestation of community that draws people from all walks of life together to celebrate the day.
