It’s always interesting to look at what artists from different countries are doing, but it gets even better when you compare not only the music genres they make, but also how well these songs do on streaming services. The first thing we did is look at the most successful countries in the Spotify Global Viral 50 charts . It’s an overall ranking of streams per capita. First of all, the most popular music genre by far was Pop , which accounts for 38% of total Spotify streams. The next one is Rock , with just over 15%, then comes Electronica with 8% and lastly Hip-Hop / Rap with 6%.

Among the top 5 most popular genres, Rock is clearly dominating over Pop . And though Spotify’s algorithms may favor some songs over others , it seems that they do a good job of showing what people actually listen to.  The data presented here was accurate by August 2016.

The US had more streams than any other country , with over 21 billion, which accounted for around 27% of total streams.  The other 4 most successful countries were Brazil (8%), Mexico (8%), UK (7%) and lastly Canada (5%).
